When I took off my oil cap from the fill tube there was a milky color substance on the bottom of the cap and around the inside of the fill tube but when I checked the dipstick it looked normal? I have just switched to synthetic oil so I was wondering if that could be what it was or if it could possibly be a head gasket?

That is usually a sign of a bad headgasket, sorry to say.
