Hi. My 2002 Ford Explorer XLT makes a howling sound coming from the rear end when accelerated over 60 mph that goes away when I release the foot from the pedal. Also, as the day goes by, the rear end makes a low rumbling noise an vibrates when I make a turn at very low speeds (as in parking or entering my driveway ). At service, they told me they have to change the whole differential. Is it true?

It could be true. Did they tell you what was wrong in the diff? It sounds more like a bearing problem.

All they told me was that this is a common problem of this model and make and that the diff had to be changed.

I would recommend getting another opinion. I'm not familiar with a common problem. If it is making noise, chances are it is just a bearing. That's my opinion.

Thanks a lot. That's why I didn't want to rush into spending a lot of $$$ without asking the opinion of those who know better.
