Steering problem
1997 Ford Explorer 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

My vehicle won't start (didn't turn over), when I removed the key the dash lights remained lit (check eng, batt, door ajar), radio stayed on and open door warning sounded.

I noticed that the steering wheel wont lock either, its as if the key were stuck in the run position. The cylinder does seem to be turning more than it should but not all the way around.

I'm thinking bad ignition cylinder, but because the steering wheel won't lock could it be the entire cylinder and ignition lock need to be replaced?

Thanks, Terry!

Hi:
If everything is staying on, then something tells me either the tumbler has broken or the rod that connects to the actual switch is disconnected.

Toward the bottom of the steering column is the actual ignition switch (electrical). It is attached to the tumbler (key) by a rod. Something there sounds disconnected.

Let me know if you have other questions.

Joe
