I was driving my car this morning and the battery light came on and the steering wheel became very stiff. The temperature gage went to hot. When I pulled over and opened the hood, the power steering fluid had overflowed over the lid and it looked like the belt was off the track. What could be wrong?

Yes, the belt has come off for some reason and that will have to be determined though inspection. One of the pulleys or components that the belt drives could be causing it by either seizing up or leaning to one side causing the belt to migrate off the pulley.
