1993 Ford Explorer Crank but cuts off when put into gear

1993 Ford Explorer 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I can crank the truck up and it will run, however when I go to put it into gear it will cut off on me. What can cause this?

Possible cause is the torque converter is locked up. Does this happen in ANY range except PARK or NEUTRAL?
