I have an automatic shift, 1998 Escort with 176,000 miles. When I start the car and try to shift the car in gear the gear release button on the side of the shif stick won't depress. I have to giggle the gear stick to get the button to depress.

Check if u have brake light it may be the brake switch
do u hear a click when pushing on brakes
or did u spill something in the shifter area
i pulled a dim once
