1995 Ford Escort dont know whats wrong need help!

I have a 95 Ford Escort. It will not start the last time I tried to start it, it backfired into the engine. Before it broke down it started overheating and it would not go over 10 miles an hour. The engine shakes really bad and then dies. I have put in a new transmission and air filter. I have put in new fluids also any suggestions on what to do?

My 1995 escort 1.9 4 cyl. Acted like it was running out of fuel. Sometimes wouldn't start. I changed the fuel filter and the air filter and it didn't help. I had it diagnosed by a pro and it turned out to be the brain that controls the fuel and air. Other symptoms were idling high. They had to send the old brain away to be repaire or remanufactured or whatever because it was so old. It cost 150.00 parts and one hour labor.
