Just bought car and having issue with fan not wanting to turn off, car not wanting to start. Turns over but no start. Already replaced the battery. Alternator fuse keeps melting the fuse box on top of battery. When we jump start it runs awhile then overheats.

This is a common problem with Volkswagens. The reason for the fuse box melting is a bad connection at the alternator cable terminal at the fuse box. There are several ways to attack this, but the way that seems to be most effective is to #1. Replace the fuse block #2. Replace the alternator fuse block terminal with a 4 gauge copper lug (preferably soldered on) Or if the black wire from the alternator is melted/damaged, replace it with a larger gauge wire. Also make sure and have the alternator tested. I've attached a voltage drop test. Let us know what you find.
