This problem with this car has been going on now for couple of years, and I have been neglecting it because it hasn't had a big difference on it running but cutting out once in a while. But now I tried to get it a smog today and I even turned off the check engine light and I guess they have a way now that they know a person resets there computer with out fixing the trouble code, it worked a couple of years ago, any way now I need to find the problem now. Does anyone know where I should start? Thanks

So many things can cause a check light to come on, I do need a code from the ecu, there may be one stored so go get a scan and re post what they find re codes, they should be able to look at the history to see deleted codes as well.

Two things I would consider are faulty O2 sensor, this can be checked with a live data read to see if the voltages are changing and look for any air leaks in the exhaust and vacuum leaks in the engine, start here.
