Hey there, I have a problem regarding my Dodge Spirit 1991 - 176 000 KMS, 2.5L.
The problem first occured a few months ago, when it first stalled, I was going about 60-70kms. It just stalled, for no apparent reason, the Check Engine light flashed, and i waited a few hours for it to restart.(i then checked for spark, which it had, and also checked i had enough gas). Since then, this problem seems to occur more and more often, the periods of time, which i have to wait before it starts, vary anywhere between 3 minutes to several hours. I have noticed, it seems to stall more often if i turn the heat on, or if i idle(sometimes even if i just put the key in the ignition switch, without turning the engine on) The simptoms, in all cases listed above, include (the odomoter(by which i mean turation of the engine RPM) will just rocket to 6/7 come back down go back up and so on, this with the engine off) *The check engine light flashes, SOMETIMES Check Gages is on as well*
Now, I decided enough was enough and took it to a mechanic, and it just so happened it stalled while in the parking lot. He tried to turn it on, saw the problem occur, and suggested the problem is coming from the [b:5329454fa4]Catalystic Converter[/b:5329454fa4], also pointing out that the lack of reaction (slow acceleartion is coming from the same faulty CAT(I have read tons of post where the answer to problems was given by : Faulty Gas Pump/Filter). The problem in this case is not that there is not enough gas going through, i think there is too much gas and it clogs. Of course, they also recommended an O2 sensor to go with the Catalystic Converter. I have an appointment tomorrow morning at 9oclock, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas/experiences with this kind of problem, and what your suggestions, or recommandations to me would be, before i go drop a few hundred dollars.
Anything would be appreciated. Thank you.

*note, car stalls often, not always*
*it doesn't necessarely stall at stop signs, as i have read in other posts*
*not influenced by speed or touration as far as I know*
*there is spark*

Your help would be GREATLY appreciated.

1. Tap the catalytic converter and listen for rattling inside, sometimes a piece of the cat can get caught in the outlet pipe and stall the car.

2. Check fuel pressure, ignition spark and isolate which system is failing.

The deed has been done. I`ve taken it in, I`m picking it up in about 30 minutes. I`ll let you know how it turned out.
By the way, I`m getting the CAT and O2 sensor changed. Hope that does the trick :S

Catalytic Converter changed.
O2 Sensor changed.

Seems to be working fine, i`m guessing that might have been the problem..
Thanks.

Discussion summary

1991 Dodge Spirit -stall/startup problem-

The owner of a 1991 Dodge Spirit 2.5L reported intermittent stalling and waits ranging from minutes to hours before restarting. They also described erratic RPM-gauge readings with the engine off. A shop replaced the catalytic converter and oxygen sensor. The owner initially reported improvement, then posted that the problem had returned.

Reported outcome: The initial improvement did not last. The owner reported recurrence after the converter and oxygen-sensor replacement; no lasting repair was established.

The owner subsequently suspected the fuel pump, but supplied no findings confirming it. The gauge behavior and the cause of the recurring stalls remain unresolved.
