Hello, I'm Danny.

Something that might help with all the complications and problems with years old gas is Seafoam brand treatment. I used this on a car that had 5 year old gas in the tank and wouldn't start. I added this to the tank shook the car around for 5 minutes and it started. I've attached a picture of the product below. Hope this might help and thanks for using 2CarPros.

Hey guys, my truck is a 1500 and when I start it it runs fine, but when I shift it into reverse or drive it is on the verge of cutting out. It mutters at about 250 rpm's for about two seconds and goes back to a normal idle. Today it finally stalled and started right back up. Other symptoms are: when I am driving (normally when its cold only) the rpm's shoot up without the speed it should be at. At 5000 rpm's in a 5.9l should be hauling but it does not until the engine warms up. I have kept the engine healthy always changing the fluids on time. I do not know maybe its time for a new engine or rebuild.

I AM very familiar with the low idle problem. The first place to look is if the battery was recently disconnected or run dead. If it was, the Engine Computer needs to relearn "minimum throttle" before it will know when it must be in control of idle speed. Until then, you might need to hold the accelerator pedal down 1/4" to get the engine to start, you won't get the nice idle flare-up to 1500 rpm at start-up, and it may tend to stall at stop signs. To meet the conditions for the relearn to take place, drive at highway speed with the engine warmed up, then coast for at least seven seconds without touching the pedals. This sounds like you have a vacuum leak, dirty throttle bore or the IAC motor is not working but to be sure lets check out these guides to help us fix it.

My truck has a 318 engine. I put new cam chain gears in engine, it runs good, but when I put in gear it stalls out.

Check ignition timing and scan for codes and check fuel pressure with a gauge. See picture and see link.
