my 1998 ram 1500 will not idle, it shuts off if i don't give it gas. does it need a new fuel filter??

It could be the filter or the pump. You need to check fuel pump pressure to the fuel rail. Here is a how to:
If you don't have a gauge, some parts stores will rent the gauge or you can purchase one at the test equipment store site on this page.

I may be too late on this but check the idle control valve. If replaced, be sure to reset computer by disconecting the batt for a few minutes. This resolved my problem with my 1500 ram 98
