You have the right idea. Remove the belt and spin each pulley to see where the noise is coming from.
As far as removing the belt, there is an automatic tensionier on it. It rides on a pivot. Using a wrench, you simply turn the tensionier on its pivot in the direction to loosten it from the belt.
