I have a 2000 Cavalier that I purchased from my mother. She had own it since 2001 and the problem was occuaring then. The car will stall olny at highway speeds. It does this spradically and does not matter if you drive it 1 mile or 50, it does not matter if it is hot or cold and sometimes it does not do it at all. When it stalls it will loose 20mph or more before it comes back on. If you step on the gas it sounds like the motor is trying to run, also if you cycle the key off than on it will start going again. It has been on a computer twice, the second time it said it was fuel filter but it has been changed. Any Ideas

Sound to me like an ign. Switch, especially if accesorries like the wipers, radio also shut off.

Other possibilities are a short to ground in the ignition system or fuel pump.

Driving and then engine dies and shuts down, everything else still works. Pull over and restart then go. Some times good and some times dies again.

Thanks for the info, have already replaced the fuel filter.
One of my mechanic friends told me had the same problem, and it turn out to be a faulty wire from the egnishtion directly to motor. Thoughts?

My son's 2000 Cavalier stalls unexpectedly after it warms up. It will stall and coast to a stop and will restart after an hour or so of sitting.

We changed the fuel filter and checked the fuel pump to find that it is operating properly. The car now has started to overheat.

Is this caused by a cooling system problem like a collapsed radiator hose?

Symptomatic of a bad ignition module, they run OK when cool, fail when hot, and then work again when cooled off.
They can be tested at most autoparts stores for free, you would have to remove it first.

The overheating could be low coolant level, waterpump, thermostat or cooling fan malfunction.

Check coolant level first, bring engine to opertating temp, cooling fan should come on around 200 degrees F. If not then fan motor, relay, fuse.

Ran my 2000 cavalier out of gas today, put gas in and now its 8 hours later and still will not go. Was running/driving fine till ran dry but now the only way to gey it to run is pour fuel down intake. Fuel pump runs, car turns over fine but whenever I turn the key on I hear like a bubbling in tank. When I manually feed intake with fuel it starts and runs untill that fuel is burned up then stalls again and wont start again till I repeat process

Have the fuel pressure tested with a mechanical gauge.

Running the car out of gas can burn the FP up because the gasoline cools the pump.

If you have no/low pressure, you will most likely have to replace the pump (and filter).

Hello,

Many things can cause your problem.....

First off is your check engine light on? If so need to see about pulling codes.

You can take a look at the info at the link below....

The battery light and the engine fuel light are on, but I've jumped the battery and all my lights work. I've checked the oil and I've made sure there is gas in the car. I jusy had it sent to a repair shop and they said it was fine. I drove home fine and an hour later, the same problem happened. I honestly have no idea.
