My mother's car was towed on a dolly from PA to SC. I went to start it and it cranked right up but there was grey smoke for about two minutes. All of the dash warning lights (low oil, check engine, abs, low water, etc) stay on for a long time and then gradually start going out. When you shift gears in place (reverse, neutral, drive) there is a buzzing sound behind the fuse box and all the lights come back on. After about 20 seconds they will start going out again until you shift again. I turned the car off to check some connections and tried to start it again after about 3-4 minutes. There is a knock coming from the passenger side of the engine when you turn the key on or off. The car will not start but just turns without cranking. Any ideas?

Did the smoke come from under the hood? If so, did you check the serp belt to see if it was okay? It could be loose, freyed. The noise you hear could be a part of the belt slaping the inner fender.

Let me know.

No, the smoke came from the tailpipe.

I need you to check a few things. With the engine off, remove the serp belt from the engine. It is on the passanger side. Start the engine after the belt is removed to see if the sound is still there. NOTE: Only allow the engine to run for a few seconds (just enough time to determine if the noise is gone). It will over heat if you run it too long and could cause other damage.

Let me know what you find.

Thank you for your input. I'll check it out and get back to you. However, I just took on a second job in retail and will not have the time in the next couple of weeks. Thanks again and I'll get back to you.

Isn't it amazing how much more we have to work to have less than we once did.

Regardless, I look forward to hearing from you. Take care and have a good Thanksgiving.
