95' chevy pickup third brake light

I have 1995 ext. cab chevy pickup with 155,000 miles and i recently installed a new third brake light. My problem is that when all my doors are shut and I put on my brakes the third brake light does not come on. However, when my drivers side door is open the third brake light will come on. I can't seem to figure out the problem. Can you help?

Well, if you tapped off power from the dome light circuit, that might explain it. Or if you are using the same ground off of the dome light. The ground will only be supplied when the door is open.
