You probably want to check the grounds in the back of the truck. There is a grounding point at the end of the left frame rail.

Check ground for taillights and check body to battery ground and engine to battery ground. Then check the white wire going to t/s switch to see if it goes in and yellow/dk grn to see if itgoes out with lights on.

Hey Wildeyes97,

I would start by cycling the emergency flasher switch, what happens is the contacts get a little corrosion which stops the brake lights from working. Also here is a guide the should help you fix the problem.

Please let us know happens so it will help others.

Best, Ken

You need to use voltage tester on the fuse circuit. Even if the fuse is good, if no voltage, the fuse is dead. Check the voltage to and from the brake switch. The lower brake lites and turn signals use the same bulb filament, just not at the same time. The lower brake lites are wired through the turn switch.

Since the lights are going back and forth as far as which one works, I don't think it's a ground. There are a few splices in the wiring where the brake light wiring is spliced together. I dug through and found a schematic (which is really basic) and highlighted where I suggest checking for a splice issue. There are also plugs to each side where the tail lights connect, but again, I don't feel that is the issue. The power issue has to come before them.

Take a look through this and let me know if it helps. Also, let me know if the light sockets are good and if the lights are bright when they work.

Take care

Joe

All lights work except the l/h brake light. I checked all fuses they are ok. Probed the power wire to the brake light no power at all. I tracked the harness back to fire wall connector no power there either.I probed connector on steering column and no power there either. Im not sure where to look next. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks

The brake lites are wired through the turn signal switch. When you step on the brake, yellow wire carries voltage for left brake lite. When you activate the brake switch, if the yellow wire coming from the steering column, isn't hot, I suspect the turn signal switch. If you get at the switch, you can check feed to and from before you remove.
