I have been told that I need to have the head gasket replaced. I have done some research and have found that this is a mechanical defect. Would it be better for me to trade the car in, or repair it and hope that this is the only time I would need to have the head gasket replaced. I want to purchase a car where 1) mechanics can easily work on the engine, i.E, you don't have to take the car apart to get to the head gasket (is that possible?) And 2) the car will last at least the next 5 years without major repair.

Your response would be greatly appreciated!
Best regards,

Head gaskets have a tendenacy to wear out by natural expansion and contraction, or if the engine get severly overheated. If you were to have it replace now, and properly, there shoudn't be any reason for it to wear out again for at least another 100,000 miles.

As far as a car that easy to work on. That depends on the mechanic. If you use the same technician all the time, ask him what's easy for him. Newer cars have longer warrentys.

All head gaskets are a big job reguardless of the car. It sits between the two biggest parts of the engine.

Any car will last as long as you want it to, it's just a matter of if you want to put the money into a car you have, or a new car with payments.

Hope this helps.
