Hi alicedawn,
Check your Power Steering Fluid Reservoir for fluid level. When it gets low it will cause a whining sound.
I don't know which engine you have. With the 3.4 Ltr, the Fluid Reservoir is easily accessible on top of the engine. The Reservoir on the 3.8 Ltr is directly below the alternator and is not so easily accessible but it can be reached. Since it has a tach, I suspect that you have a 3.8 Ltr and the fluid level in the Reservoir hasn't been checked in awhile.
Good luck.
