Engine Performance problem
1991 Chevy Cavalier Automatic 145000 miles
I just bought a 91 Chevy Lumina from a private owner last week. The guy lived about 45 minutes from me. Took the car for a test drive and everything was fine. Was told that they replaced the water pump on it and all it needed was a muffler. The car stalled once on the way to the gas station but I figured since the needle was buried on E that the car was just running out of gas. Filled the car up with gas and drove the 40 miles home with no problems. About an hour later was taking the car out and made it like a mile and the car starts sputtering and losing speed and it died. Called a tow truck and had it taken to Darlington Motors here in Darlington, Wisconsin. After waiting 3 hours for a diagnosis they came out to the waiting area and said the code that came up was o2 sensor. They replaced the Ignition control module, all the plugs and wires, cam position sensor, cat. Converter, exhaust pipes, muffler, and hangar clamps. After doing all this they started the car and let it run. It ran for about a half hour they said and then it died and had to set for 3 hours before it would start back up. After working on my car for a week they called me for payment and told me to come pick up my car because they had no idea what is wrong with it. So I got the car back 2 days ago. Well last night since I figured that I could make it about 40 minutes before it stalled I left the house. About a mile and a half from home the car died and when we turned the key there was no sound. Tried to get a jump but the jump did not work. Had to get it towed home. This morning I went out and tried to start the car and it started right up so I turned it off right away. It would also be helpful for me to note here that when the car has stalled before it turned over yet did not start. I hope I have provided you with enough information for a good diagnosis. I would give you a donation for an answer fast but the repairs I have had to do so far have completey drained my finances. Could really use your help as soon as you can. Thank you for your help as I am at my whits end with this. Okay it is now a few hours later and I just checked the alternator by starting the car and disconnecting the battery. After disconnecting the battery the car stayed on. I also checked the battery cables for corrosion and found that the connectors are relatively new. 5/20/2010 today had a new gas tank put on, fuel filter, and fuel pump. Car stiill has the same problem. Am out of ideas.
