When starting the car the hose from the thermostat is very soft and nothing coming from it as well. Is this normal? If not, what could be wrong?

Hi:
Yes and no. When the cooling system cools off, the pressure is released and the hose will become soft. Never open a radiator cap when the hoses are hot. However, there should be coolant in it. Make sure the radiator and overflow is full.
