Hey CJ MEDIVAC, not a question really, but a topic for discussion. Here is a vid https://youtu.be/MXsRfbOiBhEabout tenminutes in Paul explains why the ATF is used in a WC T-5. I would imagine it applies also to the T-4. My question or discussion topic would be, how to tell if you have a World Class version of the Borg Warner T-4 or -5 transmission? I would appreciate input from anybody with insight into this.

I've not seen the "World Class" stuff in CJs (or at all!)

I did do some more reading here and there. The T5 was mentioned, but not the T4.

From what I can tell, the multi-piece synchronizers with the "paper" coatings and the multi-bushing pieces are what makes it so special.

With no experience with it and a generic opinion, looks like the old coatings would wear off in time, and more parts means more things that could go wrong. Unless you are a super perfectionist, the original way has worked well for years if it were not abused.

It would be my hypothesis that your transmission is plain Jane, unless it's been owned and "Baja" raced by someone that might spend the money and time to beef it up!

If you just can't sleep toiling over it, tear into and see what kind of guts are inside!

The strongest and lasting transmissions are the cast iron T-150 3spd and the T-18 4spd

Thanks for the answer CJ. A perfectionist, I am not, I am a little overboard about trying to understand how stuff works tho. I have found the same info that you have. Seems that most of the t5 information is for street race cars with small block v8s. Not worried about it to the point of sleep deprivation, just wanna make a informed decision and be on to the next project. I think I can do that after this week of digging around on the internet ha. I have certainly enjoyed messing with this thing though.

My Dad was in the Air Force, There must have been a Jeep in the delivery room when they hatched me out on base.

I saw them all the time at the bases Pap was stationed at.

Cars and trucks were always just transportation (like a bus) in my eyes,

Now a Jeep, that was something special! Developed for and driven by the elite and heroes! Not a "sissy" car (That's why my two are named "Mr. Jeep and "Willy")

My first five minute ride, M151 when I was in the 1st grade.

One of the older high school boys down the street had an old '65 CJ-5 when I was in the sixth grade. I "aided" with working on it, never wanted to be away from it.

In the back of the Edwards' mind, I guess a restraining order for me had been pondered over!

I bought my first when I joined the Army. '77 CJ-5 w/ 304. (1st of 6 CJ-5s that I bought)

My current CJ-5, Mr. Jeep is also a '77 but with a 258, I tried to paint him to be similar to my first but better! I had many compliments on the non-OEM two-tone scheme (mostly from females!). I did not duplicate the botched up decal job the previous owned done to my #1

I've never had anything else as a daily driver, basically, I've been looking over the same hood silhouette since 1981. I know nothing else.

I would probably go into a deep depression without one and be in need of daily counseling and require a service animal.

Here's way back vs. Now below. The lighter color was/ should have been "sandstone" on Mr. Jeep. It's kind of a yellowish tint now.

As always, I'm the one that got screwed when it was mixed wrong, then I shot it, then was told it will be right when it fully dries!

I will get it right the next time I paint him!, They refunded me for that can. It is acceptable as it stands for now, I guess it ain't so bad after time has passed. The paint store may have contemplated a restraining order too, while I discussed the color with them after it dried.

Last 3) The caramel part. Kind of don't look too awful for an acrylic enamel driveway open air paint job, does it?

Haha. Thanks for that story. I enjoyed it so much, I copied and pasted to a FB post and shared it.
I am probably not the guy you wanna ask about a paint job. I'm gonna use parts store spraycan paint for mine to cover the bare metal. A proper paint job is well off in the future. Besides I don't wanna have to decide to ignore an unexplored side road because of tree limbs and brush in the path. Haha. The unit I was in had a small fleet of M151's. Hand me down from the regular army. Pmcs's and parts changing is all I ever did tho. Had a friend in high school who's dad had aquired an M151 from a surplus sale. We were hard on that thing. But the CJ7 I have now is the first I have ever owned. I don't think I will be without one now though. Maybe my wife will get her one of those four door mall crawlers and we take a trip to Florida one of these days. Anyway TTYL. Papaw, out.
