can you take a week 12 or 6 volt battery an and new electrolite and a charge to renew them?

They used to have a thing renew it. You would add it to the battery and it was suppose to help, it does help a little but the best thing is a new battery, On the old battery the plates get spent and sediment falls to the bottom of the battery. When it reaches a cetain hight it can short out the plates.
