Hello,
This could be due to a faulty coolant temperature sensor or the engine actually overheating.
The coolant temperature sensor can shut the engine down if it senses overheating.

If the engine is not overheating it can be shut down by a faulty coolant temperature sensor. As it can send a signal that the engine is 'too hot' to the ECM and that will shut down the engine. You test the temperature sensor with a multimeter. Check the resistance between the pins. I have included the chart for the resistance value with temperature.
