Just to clarify, when you have the starting issue, does the engine just cranks and cranks before starting?
If that is what you are experiencing, then it is likely due to worn ignition components.
The spark plugs, distributor car, rotor, wires can be worn overtime and will lose starring performance as well as drivability performance. Any of these can trigger longer cranking, also rough idle.
Inspect the igniting system, check the spark plugs for any carbon build up and gap. They should be gapped at 0.039 -.043 in.
Dirty plugs are inefficient and can trigger starting issues.
Doing a tune up might be a good step.
A typical tune up includes changing the oil, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor. Also cleaning out the throttle body.
