2006 tacoma, 2.4 L four cylinder. Check engine light on...strong smell of exhaust fume with a loud rattle or knocking sound coming from underneath toward front...Loss of power, esp. when attempting to gain speed quickly or when driving up inclines..Could this be bad plugs? What is the knocking sound?

The first thing you have to do is see what the check engine light code is.

The MIL would tell you something about the problem.

The rattling and bad exhaust fumes could be due to a bad catalytic converter.
