Working with refrigerant is really dangerous, and modifying the system is a bad idea. Copper tubing may not withstand the pressures in the high side of the system. You may not be able to find matching fittings and connectors. You wouldn't accept a mechanic cobbling your system. Do it right and buy the correct hose assembly.
