Sometimes speedometer will read way past 120 mph when going 55 or so sometimes not. Sometimes when stopped it might read 60 or so sometimes not. What could cause this?

Hello,

This happens when the vehicle speed sensor needs to be replaced here is the location so you can get the problem fixed. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens. Cheers

2005 Buick Rendezvous Automatic 60000 miles

The speedometer has stopped working. Well, not exactly true, it just doesn't work accurately. Recently when driving the speedometer shot up to 115 (not that we going that fast, the vehicle never changed speeds). It got stuck there and didn't move. Just as suddenly as that happened, it was back to normal. Then it was stuck at about 68. Even when the engine was turned off. When we were moving, it didn't move. It is now pointing at the bottom of the speedometer. It is attempting to go all the way around. Even when we are stopped, it doesn't move. Any suggestions on fixing this ourselves!

I would start by having the vehicle speed sensor checked. If no luck, it sounds like a problem with the cluster itself.

2004 Buick Rendezvous wouldn't start; lights seemed bright, fan was on. (Very cold weather) Had it towed to a dealer where they told me that it was the battery and said test was at 9 volts (I have had no previous issues with turning over; it was like no power getting to the starter) Asked to keep the battery and brought it home; battery tested 12.62 volts. Vehicle now starts. However now the speedometer does not work anymore. Technician admitted to trying to boost it to see if it would start so they could move it into their shop. Technician said they will have to replace the speedometer head; sometimes with boosting it causes surges and does strange things to electronics. Does this sound plausable? And should not the garage be responsible for fixing this themselves if it was due to them boosting it? Does any of this seem right? Or could there had been another explaination? Such as unhooking the battery had reset something? Would appreciate any comments you have.

If they admitted that they could have caused the problem, yes they should be responsible. Tell them it workled before they worked on it.

You could have two, one at the dash and the other at the transmission.

Your vehicle speed sensor is located on the transaxle

What is the possible cause for the speedometer to stop working after it reaches 65 mph and doesn't reset itself?

Has the check engine light come on? Chances are the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is bad. Have that checked, but before doing that, let me know if the check engine light has come on.

If it is the speed sensor, it is not in the dash it is in the transmission. What is the actual code? It is possible it is not the sensor, but a bad wire, bad connection, or it could be a different sensor.

Okay Mr. Steve, I will check into your answer and check the wiring harness and the connections and get back to you, because my friend has the vehicle. Thanks again and have a good evening. Your friend, Eddie Ed.

2005 rendezvous does not use a speedometer cable. It uses the vehicle speed sensor to operate the speedometer/odometer

Vehicle started to show incorrect speed. While stopped it showed I was traveling 20 mph. Now the speedometer has little movement and points straight down. The needle moves a little when started or turned on and off. Does the cluster need to be replaced? Also the temp. Guage shows over heat range on a cold engine
