Recently, my car ran out of gas and died. It's happened before, the second the fuel light comes on I get a few feet before it dies. So I put a gallon in the tank, primed the fuel pump, and started the car. The car started, then it made a terrible grinding noise, and then it died. It does this every time I try to start it. It was very low on oil, so I changed the oil, but still it grinds. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure how the fuel problem and grinding are related. Is the noise coming from the engine compartment or the fuel tank? How low on oil was it?

The noise is coming from the engine. Very little oil was their initially. The fuel problem was the original reason the car wouldn't start, I wasn't sure if it was useful info or not.

Is the noise there all the time when the engine is running? Is there anything that changes it?

Okay, one thing to check first, remove the accessory drive belt and see if the noise goes away. If the noise is gone, shut the engine down. Don't let it run for more than a few seconds. Just long enough to see if the noise is gone.

Let me know what you find.
