You will need a strut compressor to compress the coil spring after the assembly is removed from the car. I've seen two instances where the spring came flying out of the portable compressor. One took out an 8 foot light fixture on the ceiling, and I chased one through the parking lot after it escaped the compressor and shot across the shop and out the door. Compressed springs are dangerous so be sure you're aware of the potential problems and handle it carefully.
As is typical for Volkswagens and Fords, they are lacking in alignment adjustments. This strut fits into a pocket in the spindle and is not adjustable. If you find the steering wheel is still in the same position as it was before when driving on a straight road, you may get away without needing an alignment but keep an eye on tire wear. Regular cars use the upper or lower strut mount as an alignment adjustment so they have to be aligned when struts are replaced.
