Let me start with this. I am NO mechanic by any means. My problem is I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4WD with the 4.0 liter engine that has been banging when in drive and going down the road. It happens on hills and on the flat and it does not seem to matter at what speed it is going. The banging is almost like an older model vehicle when you would put it in reverse and would make that bang from the tranny except this happens when it is in drive and and it is moving. The problem is intermittent and does not happen all the time. I have been checking the fluids every day and the motor runs great aside from a very slight lifter tap. I just had the transmission serviced, but this did not fix the problem, and the mechanic which I trust says the tranny is working great. I recently noticed that the exhaust is getting loud from the area near the catalytic converter. Could the banging be a exhaust problem? If not any ideas?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
