Starter relay?

For the past month when you turned the key dash lights would come on but it wouldn't crank. If you played with the alarm & locks sometimes it would start, but now it want start. When you turn the key on the relay clicks.

My name is Embree and I have a 1999 Ford Taurus SHO V8 and it's shorting out the starter relay fuse my question is ( What is causing the car to short the relay fuse exactly? And how much will it cost to fix?).

Thanks for that info. The relay will be found under the hood, in the power distribution box. The power distribution box will have a black cap on it that will need removed and is usually located right next to the battery. Once cap is removed you will see many fuses and relays. Below is diagram of what the relay block looks like and I have marked the starter relay for easier identification..

1996 ford tauras 3.0 ohv if the relay went out how would it do? I have tried to jump it off and I have put a battery boost and it still does the same thing. If I keep trying the starter it turns over slow ive had the starter checked 2 times and both times it shows good. When I take the starter off it is very hot to the touch. When I try to start it all it does is click at the starter and before you ask I bought a new battery. Thanks for any help and thanks for the help yall have gave me larry

If the relay is at fault it will normally prevent the starter motor from kicking in at all but you can just swap the starter relay out with a diff. Relay with the same prongs to see if this helps.

Hey thanks for pointing out the IDB box or ignition distribution box. On my Taurus its found connected to the smaller of the two red positive red wires connected to the battery. My Taurus was able to start when I switched the two relays with each other 23 and 24 respectively. I think these are fan relays currently costing about 13 a piece tho some times with relays a good thump with a finger can bring them back to life. Tho I am not gonna trust it

Hello,

The starter relay is inside the constant control relay module which is under the hood here is the location below. Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

I have a 93 Ford Taurus wagon. Recently, when trying to start it, the engine would not crank, the solenoid did not click, although occcaisionally it made a small buzzing noise under the hood. Later, I turned the key and it started just fine. I had the starter tested with A+ results. I changed the battery. It remains charged.

The guy at the parts store told me the starter and solinoid are one unit and both tested great. Is there another relay/solinoid on the fender on this model?

Welcome to the forum, my info doesn't show a separate relay. The red wire with lite blue tracer, at the starter solenoid, should be hot with the key in the start position, if it isn't hot, backtrack the circuit. It will backtrack to manual lever position sensor on the transaxle. I call it a neutral switch, different manufacturers call it by different names. When the problem occurs, did you try cranking in neutral? Also, watch the lites when you try to crank, if there is a load on the starter circuit, the lites should react.

A wire on the starter solenoid shorted, the starter was checked and is okay. I am looking for the starter relay to see if that is the problem.

You don't have a starter relay it goes from the key thru the transmission range sensor then to the starter motor-this is your starter circuit control

When I turn the key there is power for a second, the nothing happens, then there is no power anywhere. Any Ideas?
