When car starts loud knocking and stall

I have a 98 escort 2.0 fi the past cpl of weeks when I go to start it it would muffle down untill I gave it some gas then it would go away, well I try to start it this morning it hesitated to turn oveand when it did you could hear a loud knocking coming from the engine I can give it gas *which of course make the knocking quicker* and will stay running but when it idles it will stall. Any ideas?

Sounds like bad crankshaft or rod bearing. Engine is about to fail. What weight oil are you using? Oil pump may be weak also contributing to issue.

Knocking could be a liter/s problem and unable to idle could be coming from the idle air control valve, try cleaning it out and see what happens
