Steam and a coolant smell inside the vehicle is usually symptomatic of a leaking heater core. The only other exception would be if there are lines routed into the vehicle to feed the heater core, that is mounted away from the firewall.
The coolant pump is driven off of the timing chain, and the chain needs to be removed for service. The thermostat housing is mounted to the back of the water pump. There is no apparent bleed valve in the cooling system, an air bleed pipe runs along the top of the engine in front of the cam cover, and I believe over to the reservoir.
