I need help with a problem. thought it was alternator but now not so sure. what is the part shown in diagram where the wires attach to the alternator? Is just a harness. here on this page is the diagram.. now thinking PCM may be the problem... gauges go crazy and now not charging the battery. http://www.2carpros.com/questions/dodge-dakota-1997-dodge-dakota-altenator-not-charging-battery
diagram on this page shows the part connected to alternator. could that be bad?

Many alternators have an internal voltage regulator. However, this vehicle's voltage is regulated via the PCM. What I recommend is to remove the alt and have it bench tested at a parts store. If it is good, then start checking wiring to see if there is a short or open circuit. If all wiring and alt check out good, suspect the PCM is bad.
