I have noticed lately that when first started there was some hesitation for a short time then runs like a champ. Today on the highway it really started to act like it was starving for fuel. It went back and forth for a mile or so then died. I cranked on it repeatedly and it started once but when I revved it up it died. I kept cranking until my battery died. And right now it's on the side of the highway waiting for me and my friends to remedy the problem amd/or tow it

See if it will start for a couple seconds using starting fluid. If it does, check fuel pump pressure. If it is low, you may need a new pump. However, I would check to make sure the pump is getting power before just replacing it.
