I stripped the engine down to the block as I used a full head set for replacement right down to the stem seals so it is quite possible that the cams may have moved but in answer to other questions I do not have any codes and as for the timing I timmed and checked it four times to make sure it was right I am really confused at the moment

Do you mean it cranks over and will not start or just won't crank at all/nothing/nada?

Cranks and w/n start

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine at least 3/16 away from ground -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

No crank at all/nothing/nada:

Could be the starter, starter relay, park and neutral switch and ignition switch assuming the battery and connections are good.

Can I check the injectors with a volt meter that is all I have if so what readings should I look for and how can I check the ignition timing with a volt meter. Could it possibly be either the cam or crank sensor.

Injectors don't produce voltage so all you can check is the signals to it which you need a noid light for.

Here's what you have to do.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

HELP PLEASE I have just finished replacing all gaskets from the sump to the rockers as well as fitting anew timing belt on my 2.2 ej22 engine and now it wont start and I dont know why. I have checked the spark and that is fine I checked double and triple checked the new timing belt that is fine, and the fuel pressure is fine. The cams may have moved while I was replacing the stem seals but there is just no sign of the engine starting at all. Someone said it may be the injectors not pulsing but how do I test that and if that is the case how is it correct. I do not have any codes to check and I am really stumped can anyone help with any suggestions?

I have a 1996 Subaru Legacy Wagon (w/nearly 211, 00 miles) that I purchased a couple of months ago. It runs great, however the problem I have been having are intermittent starts, mainly after it has been driven on warm days. After from 3 to 12 cranks, it will eventually start. Except this AM, it did not want to start for first time in the AM when cold. When I got home this PM, it started after a couple of cranks!
I recently took it in and mechanic installed fuel filter and it was fine for one day and then started to do it again. It has never left me stranded, but after the episode in AM, I am concerned that it might.
Any ideas.
Thank you

What I would start with is checking fuel pump pressure and pressure drop off. My first thought is that the pressure is dropping and taking time to get to the engine. Under the "Do it Yourself" site on our home page, you will find directions to check fuel pump pressure, the pressure regulator, and drop off. Do that and let me know what you find. Also, pay special attention to drop off. That is when you turn the key off. The system should maintain pressure for some time. If it drops off quickly, there is a leak somewhere causing the hard start. You will need a fuel pressure gauge. Many parts stores will one to you.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Joe

I put the fuel pump in myself as well as the coil, but the things you asked me about I have never done, I will look up on how to, and try to check, then get back to you thank you for the advice. I will keep I touch.

Today as I was driving, power to the car suddenly started flickering, I pulled over and put it in park; it died instantly. Tried to start it, wouldn't turn over at all. No power to the lights in the dash, wipers, radio, or horn; but the parking lights and hazards still work fine. Ignition still chimes when key is left in and door is open. When I called AAA to have it towed, the key would turn but transmission is locked up and couldn't put it into neutral. Battery is not weak, had all spark plugs and wires replaced 4 months ago when I had the timing belt replaced.

Start by having the battery and alternator checked. The battery could be week. It may have voltage to power some lights but can't suply curent to the starter. Also have all fuses and fuse links checked thay looke like large fuses.

Engine Performance problem
1996 Subaru Legacy 6 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 165000 miles

My car starts up fine when cold. However, once every three-four days when I stop after driving a few miles (such as stopping to get gas or stop at a store), the car would not start. It sounds like the engine is not getting gas. If I wait for about 15 minutes or so and let car cooled down, it starts fine. When I take it to a mechanic, the car starts fine and the mechanic could not see what is wrong. I am tired of getting stranded and have to wait for 15-20 minutes, especially at gas station. Could an air bubble be getting in my gas line? I appreciate any help.
