Ok, I called around and no one has a computer scanner for rent so I might have to buy one. But how do you test the fuel pressure?

You need a gauge and auto parts rent it as well least the bigger ones do. You will also need a gauge to check compression.

Ok I checked the spark all 4 cylinders are sparking. I then did a compression check and this is what I got. Chamber one read at 75 PSI, chamber 2 read 90 PSI, chamber 3 read 65 PSI, and finally chamber 4 read 100 PSI. I also replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor, so whats next? I know you said fuel pump so that's what I'm gonna change tomorrow, and I'm also going to check the timing belt. But if I change the fuel pump and the timing belt is fine what else could this be? Thank once more sorry for getting a little pushy I'm just getting tired driving up their to no avail.

Oh and btw I did the compression test while the engine was cold. Idk if that matters but thought I'd add it in.

Engine Mechanical problem
1996 Subaru Legacy 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 196000 miles

My 96 legacy will turn over but will not start. When I finally get it to start it acts likes its flooded & smells of gas. After it starts it runs fine w/ no check engine light. Earlier this year it had new spark plugs, wires & fuel filter. Any ideas on whats causing this?

Now the car wont start at all. Started w/ engine starter but immediately dies after that. Pulled the intake & outtake fuel line from the fuel filter & there is no gas present. Any suggestions welcome.

Check the fuel pressure if its within specs, could be caused by the following:

Probable causes of an engine running rich are as follows:

1. Excessive fuel pressure can be cause by restricted fuel return line or defective fuel pressure regulator.
2. Defective Oxygen Sensors.
3. Leaking injectors and fuel pressure regulator.
4. Coolant temperature sensor out of calibration.
5. Restricted air intake system

It sounds pretty much like the motor is shot due to your compression readings. You can pull the heads and look for damage, it may be just bent valves but I think it may be more. Start there. Then you can asses whether or not it is cost effiecient to fix the car or not with a 19 yr old car I would not put the money in it.

Engine problem
1996 Subaru Legacy 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 60500 miles

I was on vacation for a month and a friend of ours kept an eye on our cars by running them every 3 days. The day we got home our subaru legacy would not start. It turns over fine but will not start. We checked the plugs and changed them to see if that was the problem since they looked terrible. We checked the valves for turn on one side to ensure the timing belt was not broke and they turned and ensured the other side turned also since we believe it is a two part belt and the belt was turning on the other side also. We can smell gas so it should be getting fuel. We tried using starting fluid to see if that helped but it did not. Any help would be appreciated. Car also does not have cap and rotor. Just has ignition modules I think is what they are called. So not easy to ensure we have spark. I live in Japan so finding and reading a manaul is hard. Still trying to find what wire to hook up a timing light to see if that will work to see if we have spark not sure if that'll say if we have spark going but might.

Subject: spark
The car does not have a normal cap and rotor with plug wires so I am not able to do that test. It has modules. So do you know a good way to test it with these?

You have a DIS-okay try testing the camshaft and crankshaft sensor-the computer has to see signals from them in order to tell the ignition control module to fire the coil

Many DIS systems use the "waste spark" setup where one coil fires a pair of spark plugs that are opposite one another in the firing order. Others, including the newer coil-over-plug systems, have a separate coil for each spark plug.

Individual DIS coils are tested in essentially the same way as epoxy-filled (square-type) ignition coils. First, isolate the coil pack by disconnecting all the leads. Set the ohmmeter in the low range, and recalibrate if necessary. Connect the ohmmeter leads across the ignition coil primary terminals, and compare the primary resistance reading to specifications (typically less than 2 ohms). Then connect the ohmmeter leads across the coil secondary terminals and compare the secondary resistance reading to specifications (typically 6,000-30,000 ohms). If readings are outside the specified range, the coil is defective and needs to be replaced.

If measuring the secondary resistance of a DIS coil is difficult because of the coils location, try removing the wires from the spark plugs and measure secondary resistance through the plug wires rather than at the secondary terminals on the coils. Just remember to add in a maximum of 8,000 ohms of resistance per foot for the plug wires.

Could be if its soaked and also might be a problem with excessive fuel pressure or injector/s leaking.

Engine Performance problem
1996 Subaru Legacy 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic 179000 miles

My 96 Subaru Legacy lsi will not start. The problem began when I had parked my car with low fuel on the first really cold nite (-10). I have since added heat, more fuel, replaced the battery, plugged it in with a block warmer, changed the spark plugs, & even tried starting fluid. The car is getting fuel, but will not turn over. What should I do next?

Did you do an ignition spark test if not do so and comeback with results this is where we start.

Help ! My 1996 subaru legacy 2.2 wont start after having all major gaskets and timing belt replaced whats wrong? I recently replaced all gaskets from the sump to the rockers even the cam seals due to various oil and coolant leaks and have just fitted a new cam belt and timed it correctly but the damn thing wont start. I've checked and there is plenty of spark the fuel pressure is normal I even fully charged the battery but nothing not even a hint of firing whats wrong with it I'm really stumped please help me !
