1996 Explorer w/120000 miles temp gauge moves up and down
smells heavily of exhaust, loud muffler like while running and makes hissing sound when engine is turned off

I was told by a mechanic to just sell the car due to cost of repair but the engine seems to be just fine

Mechanic thought it was a major gasket

Mechanic probably thinks the head gasket or head is cracked.

Have a compression test performed to check head gaskets.

If head or head gasket, you can always replace engine with used one. Cheaper than a remanufactured one.

Not a head gasket, a water gasket that regulates engine temp
Leaking small amount of fluid
