4 runner 1991 2.4 turbo diesel. Having somewhat overhauled cooling system ie thrmo, new water pump and a good flush to ensure no blockage, things not as they should be. Have had to replace gasket on water pump 4 times due to mysterious leakage. On final attempt, as there were no indications of other problems, went all out to fit fail proof over kill gasket. That held until pressure in the system blew out through radiator cap which is fitted with pressure release device, then gasket failed again. Is this head gasket problem? I have no water in the oil and no smoke from exhaust and as far as I can tell no loss in power and as long as I have enough water in the system, no overheating. After a summer under the hood, I'm back where I started and clueless. Any ideas?

If pressure is blowing the pressure out of the cap, most likely you have a bad head gasket. It does not necessarily mean water would get into the oil or vice versa when head gasket fails as the head gasket are of metal type which does not leak badly when they fails.
