I have a load thunking sound coming from rear of engine when it is in gear and not under a load. The noise goes away when I give the engine gas. The engine pressure builds up and the vehicle dies and will not start until the pressure subsides. Usually takes about 2 to 5 minutes. It is a 91 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 liter straight 6

Engine pressure? Do you mean oil pressure? If the check engine light is on, have the computer scanned for codes. Check to make sure the flywheel is tight and the torque converter is tight.
