When I turn the key the car turns over but then chokes out and the engine dies. I checked the code by turning the ignition on and off 3 times in a row and the check engine light flashes 10 times. What does this mean?

You read the code wrong. There's a series of up to four flashes, then a pause that you missed, then the rest of the flashes represent the second digit. Most likely you got code "55" which just means the end of the message. In other words, there's no fault codes.

Was the battery recently disconnected? Will the engine stay running if you press the accelerator 1/4"?

Do you understand how to count the flashes to get a code? If it flashed 5 times, there was a short pause, and then 5 more times, that would be a code 55. If that is the case, that is nothing other than an indication that the computer is done.

Let me know so I can further assist you. Also, let me know the symptoms.
