This car will start with either but won't stay going for long unless driven as soon as you let off accelerator is goes dead what could be the issue. Will not start without either

I would suggest starting by doing a compression test. If everything is well over 100PSI, then test the fuel pressure and check for big air leaks.

No, not necessarily. There are other components that play a part in that also and it needs to be troubleshooted properly. I seriously doubt that is even true because you said it ran on ether. It can't run without spark
