what should i do now

i have a fj60 1984. when i brought it a few months back it needed a few things done to it. it chews through petrol backfires and is hard to start up in the morning. i put a new carbie kit through it new extractors plugs but it still does the same thing

Test the compression and see if that is an issue as that is a economy killer.
Also, check fuel pressure.
