The engine starts going above 180 degree F while driving 10 or so miles. Arrive at destination and shut off car. After a few minutes I went to restart the car and there was no starter sound. Let the car cool down for 30 or so minutes and it starts up fine. Car has a 396 engine, headers and a turbo 400 tansmission. It use to run fine and then overheated one day after interstate traveling. Thermostat is a 150 degree F design. There is a cooling fan that I need to check as I have not seen it work. The engine fan is a non clutch type. There is an aftermarket a/c unit on the car.

Doyou have a shroud on the radiator? It should otherwise the fan is just spinning around and not doing what it's should like draw air into and through radiator. The thermostat you have is to cold it should be a 180 if it overheats then the radiator is bad or head gasket or some other problem. Check for cold spots on radiator after heating up if it has those the rad is no good.

There is a shroud for the fan. I am not sure why the thermostat is so low. I will change that and test out the radiator for blockage.

Sounds like you just purchased this car or recently, the tstat may be low cause the guy who owned it prior may have had some overheat problems and figured that was the easy way to fix it. The shroud on those should go all the way to the fan and if you have cold spots on rad then it's no good as it should feel same temp all over as well as no rotted fins. If I remember correctly those rads shold 4 or 5 core thick. Been a long time since I worked on one of those lol.
