Engine turns over but will not start

Just put in new battery in 2003 Passat, V6 2.8L. Engine turns over but will not start. Car has been outside in -20 degree weather for 2 days. New battery purchased from VW dealer was changed on second day. After a couple of start tries there is noticeable gas smell. Gas tank is 3/4 full. All fuses are good including one for fuel pump. All appropriate dashboard lights work during engine turnover.

Already Tried:
Tried to start for 45 - 60 seconds w/o touching gas pedal, engine just turns over.
Also, tried to start for 45 - 60 seconds with gas pedal pushed to the floor, again, engine just turned over w/o starting.

In addition, removed fuel pump fuse, turned over engine with gas pedal pushed to floor. Once engine sounded like it was going to start, put fuse back in. However, after 3 tries with this procedure, it still did not start. It did however, advance to some engine combustion, but just short of starting.

Hello,

This sounds like you have a crankshaft position (engine RPM) sensor that is not working. Here are two guides to help us get started by walking you thought he steps with diagrams below to show you how to replace the sensor on your car.

Car turns over but does not start I previously replaced an anti freeze hose and took it for a test drive. During that time I think the temperature of the car got to high causing the engine to shut off. I have had the same anti freeze problems in the past and it would usually alert me "High temperature" and I would pull over with and add more antifreeze and it would always start back up, It did not alert me this time and engine shut off automatically and tried to do the same, add more anti freeze and it would not start back up this time, I feel like I fixed most of the leakage but possibly a very slow leak in the antifreeze, but I am not sure where its all going. With that said there is multiple codes, but two new codes came up that says pending codes, P0688-ECM/PCM power relay sense circuit and P0343 camshaft position sensor A-bank 1 circuit high input. I'm thinking it's P0688 code that is preventing it from starting. My question is how do I solve the problem and get get my car running again? Thanks.

Once every 3 or 4 weeks the motor will not start after we have been driving the car for a while. The motor turns over all right, but will not start. If we wait 40 or so minutes, then it will start.

P1570 = Engine Control Module Locked.

You would need to adapt Montronic Engine Control Module (ECM)-J220- to electronic anti-theft immobilozer.

Also try a capacitive discharge. This means you unhook the battery and touch the cables together and then reconnect.

Does the starter turn?

Does the engine turn when the starter turns?

Does the check engine light come ON when the key is in the ON position?

Is the timing belt ok? What engine?

Is the fuel pump relay ok (if gas)?

Do you have spark and fuel spray from injectors?

A tow to a garage + 1/2hr to 1hr labor, and you will have an answer.

It sounds like a classic crankshaft angle sensor shorting out, but we should do some testing before replacing it to make sure we are barking up the right tree, when it doesn't start we need to check for fuel pressure and ignition spark, please follow these links to start,

Or could that one cause those to malfunction
Another person thought it was a speed sensor and
Mass air flow sensor what do you think?

The code that really stands out is the crank angle sensor engine rpm code, this sensor will cause all kinds of problems. I would try replace the crankshaft angle sensor and see what happens, follow this link for more info

Okay I will try that. Today when I was driving the battery light came on then it said "alternator workshop!" It still drove 30 miles home after that happened and after driving a while the battery light went off do you think this has something to do with the crank shaft angle sensor
