The first thing that needs to be done is to check the diagnostic codes from the check engine light to determine what is causing the problem with your car. Here is a tutorial what is involved for checking diagnostic codes:

If you don't have access to a code reader or scanner auto parts stores have tool loaner programs and can rent you one. Auto parts stores like AutoZone can check codes for free.
