Took my van to the shop because it was knocking and vibrating badly come to find out it's not a CV axle but multiple things. I just want to know what I can fix just to be able to drive it to work and back so that I can make the money to fix it all? And by the way engine is perfectly fine. Picture has everything the said needs to be done on it total price for everything is $4,000.00.

Welcome to 2CarPros.

That is really hard for me to answer because many of the things can be dangerous. For example, I don't know how bad the tires are or the tie rods, control arms and so on.

Can you explain what the vehicle was doing, was there anything that caused the symptoms to occur, and so on. Also, it is really hard for me to believe that all of this needs done at the same time. Have you considered a second opinion? It seems as though they are rebuilding the front end and most times everything doesn't go bad all at once. There are just so many questions I have. Why pressure test the cooling system unless you are adding coolant all the time. It isn't uncommon to add a little now and then. Are all the accessory drive belts bad at the same time? Are they ready to break or can they go longer?

Let me know.

Joe

Front driver tire is bald on the outer side and the car would shake badly starting at 30 mph and make a constant knocking all getting worse as speed increased but all would stop as soon as the gas pedal was depressed. Other than that the car is in great condition. This is all I wanted them to check and instead got a list of repairs totaling out at $4,000.00.

Welcome back:

I suspect there are issues with tie rods. If I provide directions on how to check, is it something you can do? You will need to safely lift and support one side of the front end at a time.

Let me know.

Welcome back:

Safely lift one of the front wheels from the ground about an inch. Just enough to you can spin it. Support the vehicle so it can't fall. Place your hands at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock on the tire and with effort, see if you can wiggle the tire/wheel back and forth. If you can, confirm the other wheel isn't moving the same, but it shouldn't if it is on the ground. If you find there is play, have a helper watch the tie rods for excessive movement.

Next, place your hands at 6 and 12 o'clock. And with effort, see if there is movement in the ball joints. Again, if there is, have a helper watch while you do it to see where the movement is happening.

I attached 3 pictures. The first one shows a outer tie rod. I highlighted it. On the opposite side, is an inner tie rod that is under the boot. You can't see if, but you will be able to tell if there is movement there. Each side of the vehicle has both and inner and outer. They said both inner need replaced and one outer. Note, in picture 2, the outer tie rod is attached to the steering knuckle. That is where you will watch it for play.

In picture 3 I highlighted the ball joint and on the other end are where the control arm bushings are. They said the control arm needs replaced. Check for play in the ball joint and you may need to get a pry bar to put pressure on the control arm to check for play in the bushings.

Let me know if this helps and what you find.

Both tie rods need replaced and both control arm bushings are really bad with one coming out of place. Could either of these be the cause of the knocking or vibration? Firestone said knocking was probably engine mount but the noise is not coming from under the hood.

Welcome back:

The noise could be from either.
