My wife has, on 3 or 4 occasions now, heard an irregular knocking sound coming from the engine. I have been unable to replicate it and was, therefore, doubtful that it was serious. Today she sent me a video (with audio) of the vehicle at idle and, sure enough, a very strange tapping/slapping/thumping sound can be heard. There are no engine lights on, no maintenance minder lit up. The vehicle has had its timing belt and spark plugs recently replaced but, per my wife, made this noise before that time. I'm kind of lost as far as what the next step is. It's very difficult to replicate, seems to only come at idle, I don't know if I should take it to the dealer yet or wait until I'm able to replicate the incident.

What ever you sent didn't come through, remove the belt for water pump alternator and start car see if knock noise is there or not. If it isn't then it's in the accessory drive and not engine. Cold be a pump, alternator anything in that part of car causing it. Or it could be the belt and tensioner that is making noise as they should be replaced every 90,000 miles.

I'd like to send a video of the knocking. Since I can't seem to do it here is the link to the youtube page. http://youtube/sjyz4Nx2eNs
The belt and tensioner were just replaced. The noise was the same before and after replacement. I just spoke to my wife and she's saying it has happened 8-10 times.

It works fine for me. Try going to YouTube and searching for "engine noise, Chris Kauth". It should come up. It's about 11 seconds long.

I can't really determine what it is, It may be the torque converter bolts are loose or one of them are. But i'd really have to physically hear this up close.
