Within the first mile of driving my 2006 Honda Odyssey it makes a clunk sound in the front end. It has always done this. Is it serious?

It could be the front lower control arms are not tight enough. You should have a mechanic inspect and retorque the lower control arms.

When shifting from park to reverse (cold only) my 03 odyssey makes a loud clunk, kind of like I was parked on a hill without the parking brake on, but I'm not. Shifts fine otherwise and no vibrations. Any ideas on what to check.

Have the engine mounts checked. They culd be worn or broken resulting in excessive movement when shifting.

Just to add to KHLow2008's post. We change the rear mounts all the time.

Thanks for the reply. I checked all 4 mounts and they looked good. Rubber looked fine and no excessive movement or noises when reving the engine (low rev while in drive with foot on brake). And no vibration at idle. The clunk only happens when the engine is cold shifting into reverse from park or drive. Wondering what else I can check? Have changed trans fluid every 30k miles and dip stick looks good now.

Mounts might look good as where they are sitting. Get someone to look at the engine while you shift into R and note if the engine seems to twist backwards.

A bad mount does not necessarily mean there would be excessive vibrations, especially when in neutral. Revving the engine is not going to show anything as there would be no tortional load on the mounts.

For some time I would have very intermittent stall/jerk of car when accelerating. Could not get problem really diagnosed by my regular mechanic. Recently driving it and stopped at light, when I let off the brake and pressed to accelerate, there was kind of a loud clunk (thought someone must have bumped into me), the car jerked forward a little and died. I started the engine again and it ran fine in neutral. When I put it into gear it would kind of clunk and die. Repeated 5-6 times. Then it started and I drove over 100 miles with no further problems over two days. I did notice a grinding sound once when I was decelerating coming into stop light at about 25 mph. Any ideas? One friend suggested torgue converter clutch solenoid, and another help sight questioned the CV joints. Thanks. Feels like I'm at Car Talk

It sounds like your friend that mentioned the clutch solenoid might be correct. A CV joint will cause a clunking, but not any of the other symptoms unless it is really really bad, like falling out and freezing things up bad. And you were able to drive it, so that to me rules out a CV joint issue.

No problem. I would take it to a shop that will pull both soft and hard codes for free. Be firm in insisting you need soft codes.
